FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE CHOOSING EDIBLE PLANTS
Before choosing an Edible plant to grow there are some factors you need to identify and tick the box. Looking out these factors and buying plants based on these helps to grow a successful garden.
Container size and depth
You need to choose pots based on your plant’s needs. I’ll give you a size chart in upcoming paragraphs. But one thing is if you want to grow bigger edible plants that need bigger pots., reduce the quantity of the plants. Because overcrowding affects plant growth and health.
Identify the plant root type and choose pots based on this., Shallow-rooted plants like leafy veggies grow in shallow pots aka less depth pots. Deep-rooted plants with veggies or fruits like tomatoes need deep pots.
If you start from seed you can grow in a seedlings tray., then transfer to actual pots or grow bags. Edible plants are short-lived living they grow faster than foliage or succulents. So, choosing bigger pots based on the matter size is preferable.
Sunlight Requirements
Every plant has its unique need for sunlight. For plants, sunlight helps to generate carbohydrates aka plant food. Like humans every one of us differs in height, weight and growing habits so choose the spot based on plant need., or buy a plant based on your spot’s sunlight.
In the Shade-loving Plants Blog post, I talked about the importance of sunlight, how to categorize light and how to know the spots of light. So, feel free to read and know more about sunlight.
Climate and growth zone
If you living in extreme heat weather or cold weather choose plants based on the dominant climate zones and temperatures of your location.
You can see your climate zone using a climate zone map to identify your zone climate and match it with your plant’s ideal climates, this technique is applicable for temperatures as well.
